About Southampton Common
Southampton Common is the city's largest green space, covering roughly 148 hectares of woodland, parkland, ponds and rough grassland north of the city centre, and is managed by Southampton City Council. Much of it is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest and it holds a Green Flag Award, supporting one of Britain's largest populations of the rare great crested newt. For families, the big draw is the fenced nature play area and water park near The Hawthorns. It is designed to encourage adventurous play, with zip wires and a climbing tower alongside traditional swings, slides and roundabouts, while water spouts, pumps and water wheels send streamlets of water through the site for dam-building and splashing. There is plenty of seating and picnic benches inside the fenced area. An on-site toilet and baby-changing area, plus a refreshment kiosk selling ice cream, drinks and hot and cold food, open at weekends and during school holidays. The adjacent Hawthorns Urban Wildlife Centre has an indoor cafe and toilets. The wider Common also has a model yachting lake, a paddling pool, a fishing lake and nature trails. Admission is free; pay-and-display parking is available off Cemetery Road.
