About Wyken Croft Nature Park
Wyken Croft Nature Park is an open green space off Wyken Croft in the Wyken area of Coventry, run by Coventry City Council and described as the city's first ecological park. It was created as part of a Department of Environment reclamation scheme over the site of the former Craven Colliery, which had been used as a refuse tip in the 1950s and 1960s; the land was topsoiled, landscaped and planted with native trees and wildflowers, and is now rich with wildlife. The park runs alongside the River Sowe, and its riverside footpath forms part of the Sowe Valley Walk, a longer route following the river. Within the park there is a children's play area with equipment such as swings, a slide and a climbing frame, alongside access to the adjoining Brandon Wood for woodland walks. A 1450m trail on footpaths and grass loops the site, popular with walkers and dog owners. The park is free to enter. With its combination of a nature-focused setting, open riverside green space and a play area, Wyken Croft suits families who want to mix playground time with a longer walk and some wildlife spotting rather than a purely equipment-led visit.
