About Heaton Park

Heaton Park is a handsome Victorian park in the Ouseburn valley at the heart of Heaton, refurbished in 2011 with Heritage Lottery funding. Owned by Newcastle City Council and managed by Urban Green Newcastle, it offers two excellent play areas split for younger and older children - the Heaton Park Toddlers Play Area and the Heaton Park Older Children's Play Area - so families with mixed-age groups are well catered for. Beyond the playgrounds there are plenty of open grassed spaces for informal games and family fun. The park is rich in history, featuring the 13th-century ruins of King John's Palace, a fortified medieval manor house, with original gates and pillars still standing at the entrance. The restored Victorian Pavilion dates from 1880 and is home to the popular Sambuca Italian restaurant, which opens daily at noon, and there are toilets inside the Pavilion. A good network of footpaths runs through the park and connects to neighbouring green spaces, suitable for prams or wheelchairs. On-street parking is available at Heaton Park View and Jesmond Vale Lane. The park is free to enter.
