About Horfield Common
Horfield Common is an area of public open space covering around 32 hectares (79 acres) in north Bristol, making it one of the city's largest public parks and one of its highest points above sea level. The land began as medieval parish property with common grazing rights; after preservation campaigns, Bristol Corporation acquired it in 1908 to secure it as a permanent public space, and it is managed today by Bristol City Council. The play area on Dorian Road is fenced to keep it dog-free and offers dynamic, challenging equipment for a range of ages, linking directly with the adjacent skate park. An enclosed play area here includes a climbing frame, a small climbing wall, a slide and swings for both younger and older children. Beyond play, the common has tennis courts, bowling greens, several football pitches and a wildlife pond, with the Horfield Leisure Centre close by. Wildflower habitat areas support birds and insects across the open grassland. The common is open year-round with no admission charge and is popular for walking, jogging and informal recreation.
