About Pennington Flash Country Park

Pennington Flash Country Park is a 200-hectare country park operated by Wigan Council, set between Lowton and Leigh around a 70-hectare lake, or 'flash', formed by historic coal-mining subsidence. The park opened in 1981 and now forms part of the Flashes of Wigan and Leigh National Nature Reserve, a haven for birdwatchers with eight observation hides recording a wide range of species. In June 2023 a new nature-themed adventure play area opened as part of a multi-million-pound transformation of the site, designed for toddlers, juniors and teenagers. The inclusive playground blends into its natural surroundings and includes a central 'Toddler Lake' with a swan springer, tall towers with crawling tubes, multiple swings, a cableway, a sand pit with a sand excavator and a wheelchair-accessible seesaw. Beyond the play area, visitors can enjoy a nine-hole municipal golf course, fishing, sailing and watersports, and miles of footpaths suitable for walkers, cyclists and wheelchair users. On-site facilities include a cafe, an information centre, toilets, picnic areas and a car park with EV charging. The park is free to enter and open to the public year-round.
