About Mesnes Park

Mesnes Park sits just northwest of Wigan town centre on Mesnes Park Terrace and is managed by Wigan Council. Opened in 1878 after a design competition, this Grade II listed Victorian park covers around 30 acres and underwent a major 6.1 million pound Heritage Lottery restoration completed in 2013. Families come for the new children's play area, which was rebuilt with inclusive equipment and separate provision for under-5s and for 5 to 12 year olds. Around the play area the park offers formal flower beds set within broad lawns, an ornamental pool, mini golf, bowling greens, tennis courts and sports grounds, all framed by original listed features including an ornate Pavilion, bandstand and memorials. The Pavilion houses a cafe with indoor and outdoor seating overlooking the park, making it an easy spot to stop for refreshments. There is no on-site car park, so most visitors use limited on-street pay-and-display parking on the roads around the park, with some free disabled on-street spaces. With its heritage setting, play facilities and cafe, Mesnes Park is a popular choice for a relaxed family afternoon in central Wigan.
