About Sherdley Park
Sherdley Park is one of St Helens' largest green spaces, covering around 336 acres in Sutton and managed by St Helens Borough Council. The former estate of coal and copper baron Michael Hughes was bought by the local authority after the Second World War to give residents a place to relax and play, and it now mixes acres of well-kept grassland and wildflower meadows with a lake, ponds, streams and areas of open woodland. Families head for the children's play area, which has gained an inclusive Wicksteed swirl roundabout for children with special educational needs and disabilities, and the adjoining new skate park, fitted with ramps, pipes, jump boxes and grind rails alongside an existing half-pipe. Outdoor gym equipment sits nearby. Wide four-metre paths run through the park, making it a good spot for teaching children to cycle or scoot, and there are woodland walks, picnic benches and a cycle path for longer outings. The park is also home to an 18-hole golf course and hosts the St Helens Show. Some grassed areas are left to grow to boost biodiversity. Free to enter with car parking on site, Sherdley Park suits active family days out all year round.
