About Alexandra Park
Alexandra Park is Oldham's best-known Victorian park, laid out on Kings Road to the south-east of the town centre and managed by Oldham Council. It opened in 1865 and was created partly as a relief project to provide work during the hardship of the Lancashire Cotton Famine. Today it blends formal heritage landscaping with a wide range of family facilities. A boating lake sits at the heart of the park, overlooked by a boathouse cafe, while a heated conservatory and ornamental gardens with herbaceous borders and shrub beds provide year-round colour. For children there is a play area with a sand pit, and the council has installed accessible playground equipment including sensory paths, accessible swings, an accessible roundabout and a boardwalk so disabled children can join in. Sporting provision is generous, with seven free tennis courts and three crown green bowling greens, plus an active fishing club using the lake. Car parks serve visitors arriving by car, and toilets are available when the gardeners are on site. Entry to the park is free.
