About Ayresome Gardens

Ayresome Gardens is a small urban park on Linthorpe Road in Middlesbrough, laid out on the site of the former Ayresome Cemetery. The cemetery was founded in 1854 as the town's first purpose-built graveyard, to cope with Middlesbrough's rapid Victorian growth; the last burial took place in 1950 and the site was decommissioned in 1962 before being turned into the park seen today. For families the main draw is the children's play area, set within the gardens alongside a basketball court and free outdoor fitness equipment suitable for older children and adults. The Millennium Arch, which once stood in Victoria Park in the town centre, now marks the entrance to the gardens, adding a distinctive landmark. Planted beds and lawns give the park a calm, green feel, making it a pleasant stop for play combined with a sit-down close to the town centre and Linthorpe shops. The park is managed by Middlesbrough Council and is free to enter.
