About Wavertree Playground (The Mystery)
Wavertree Playground, known to everyone in the city as 'The Mystery', is a 104-acre open park in Wavertree and one of the first purpose-built public playgrounds in the UK. In 1895 the land was bought by an anonymous donor — later revealed to be the shipping magnate Philip H. Holt — and given to the City of Liverpool, earning the park its enduring nickname. Its official opening in September 1895 drew an estimated 60,000 people. Today it is prized for its huge expanse of open grass for games, a games field and a wildflower meadow, with a children's play area offering a slide, climbing frame and agility equipment. Every Sunday it hosts the free Mystery Junior parkrun, a 2km timed run for children aged 4 to 14, and the adjacent Wavertree Sports Park adds an aquatics centre, tennis centre and athletics track.
