About Westdene
The Westdene play park at Barn Rise is one of the newer additions to Brighton & Hove's playgrounds, built with City Parks funding by Brighton & Hove City Council and free to use. Completed in 2021, the playground was developed in partnership with the local community, with the nearby My First Friends Nursery raising a share of the funding from local businesses and residents. The result is a generously equipped play space with more than 20 play features, including climbing frames, swings, slides, net and plank bridges, a fireman's pole and a spinning wheel. The layout is divided into a main play area, a dedicated toddler area and a quiet corner, so it caters well to children of different ages and temperaments. Importantly, the project also delivered improved access and play equipment for children with disabilities, making it a more inclusive space. The playground is enclosed by the wall of an old farmyard once attached to Newman's Barn, a structure that survived from the late 1700s until the early 1960s, giving the site a distinctive historic backdrop. On-site facilities such as toilets, cafe and parking are not confirmed, so visitors should plan ahead. For families in the Westdene estate, this is a modern, varied and inclusive local playground.
