About Leverhulme Park

Leverhulme Park is an extensive recreation ground on Long Lane in the Tonge area of Bolton, managed by Bolton Council. The land was given to the people of Bolton by Lord Leverhulme (William Hesketh Lever), donated to the local authority in 1917 on condition that part of it was used for the pursuit of organised athletics; that sporting legacy still defines the park today. It offers a notably wide range of facilities, including a children's playground, a running track, football and cricket pitches, a multi-use games area, a bowling green and extensive open space. For those who prefer to explore, the park has nature trails, dog-walking areas, an orienteering course and a cycle trail. Part of the site forms Leverhulme Park Local Nature Reserve, a haven for wetland birds and plants with several small ponds thought to be the remains of old field ponds. The park also hosts a community centre, gym and athletics stadium, and sits within a wider green corridor along the River Croal valley. Maps of the park can be bought from the Community Centre reception. Entry to the park is free.
