About Shard End Lake
Shard End Lake is a green space in Shard End, east Birmingham, set around a man-made lake created from a former gravel quarry and managed as part of Birmingham City Council's Kingfisher Country Park, which cares for the River Cole valley. The lake is well known locally for coarse fishing, holding roach, perch, bream, tench, carp and pike, and the surrounding area has been improved for both anglers and visitors with new benches and landscaping. For families there is a children's playground beside the lake, along with a basketball court for older children and plenty of open green space to enjoy. The ponds and wetland margins around the water have become havens for pond invertebrates, amphibians and winter visiting birds such as teal and wigeon, adding wildlife interest to a walk. Located off Packington Avenue, it forms part of the chain of green spaces along the River Cole in east Birmingham. The mix of a playground, a well-stocked fishing lake and informal recreation space makes Shard End Lake a varied and well-used neighbourhood green space.
