About Mayer Park
Mayer Park on Church Road in Bebington is a Green Flag park managed by Wirral Council, founded in 1869 when philanthropist Joseph Mayer developed and donated it to the local community. It is open 24 hours a day, all year round and free to enter. The children's play area was completely refurbished in 2016, when two new picnic benches were added, and offers a good range of equipment; it is fenced and incorporates a dog-free grassed area. Safety is taken seriously: all play equipment is inspected daily by on-site staff and weekly by RPII inspectors. Beyond play, the park keeps its historic character with a former rose garden, an unusual box hedge feature known as the 'knott garden', memorial seating and a nature area on a former allotment site. Wheelchair-accessible tarmac paths run throughout, and there are entrances on Parkside Road, Ellens Lane and The Village, with a bus stop at the Church Road main entrance and Bebington and Port Sunlight stations nearby. Toilets are at the nearby Civic Centre rather than in the park, and parking is on-street or in the car park behind the Church Road shops. With its gardens, history and refreshed playground, Mayer Park is a pleasant local day out.
