About Greenslate Community Farm
Greenslate Community Farm is a volunteer-run community permaculture farm at Billinge, just a few miles from Wigan, set across roughly 25 to 37 acres of farmland and woodland. Built by and for the local community, it focuses on sustainable food growing, education and healthy lifestyles, and it is free to visit with donations welcome, which makes it an easy, relaxed family day out. The animals have a central place on the farm and include pigs, goats, sheep, donkeys, horses, chickens and rabbits; visitors can see them in a working farm setting and may have the chance to help feed them. Families can wander the farm site and woodland trails and join kids' activities, then stop at the dog-friendly Straw Bale Cafe, which serves a wide range of vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free food made partly with produce grown on site, alongside the Straw Bale Farm Shop. The farm site is open to visitors every day from 10am to 4:30pm, while the cafe and shop run Wednesday to Sunday, 10am to 4pm. As a community venue the atmosphere is calm and low-key rather than a commercial play park.
