About King George V Playing Field
King George V Playing Field is a free public playing field in the Lexden and Braiswick area of west Colchester, maintained by Colchester City Council as one of the 81 playgrounds it manages across the city. Like other King George's Fields across the country, it forms part of the national network of recreation grounds created in memory of King George V, and today it combines a children's playground with open sports pitches. The play area includes children's play equipment and a basketball facility, giving younger children somewhere to play while older children and adults use the surrounding grassland and football pitches. The council's Lexden King George sports ground provision includes full-size 11-a-side football pitches here, so the site works as both a casual play space and an organised sports venue. In 2026 the playground was included in the council's citywide play parks investment programme and was scheduled for a full refurbishment, with local residents helping to shape the designs. Entry to the field and playground is completely free and the space is open access throughout the day, making it a convenient, no-cost choice for families living in and around Lexden.
