About Castle Hill Recreation Ground

Castle Hill Recreation Ground is a free public recreation ground off Fircroft Road in the Castle Hill area of north Ipswich, managed by Ipswich Borough Council. Its standout feature is a Roman-themed play area that opened in time for October half term in 2022, as the first play space delivered under the council's Play Area Strategy 2022 to 2027. The design was inspired by a Roman villa discovered nearby at Castle Hill, and the playground is built as a play villa complete with a mosaic pavement, floral walls and Roman-themed graphics that reference what living in a real villa might have been like thousands of years ago. Children can explore an amphora vase full of Roman coins, gladiator faces and a gladiator training area, a pantry, Roman baths, a rope swing and hopscotch. The play area is notable for inclusion too: it was the first in Suffolk to feature an ability swing for wheelchair users. Surrounded by open grassland for games and picnics, Castle Hill Recreation Ground offers an imaginative, accessible and completely free day out for families in north Ipswich.
