About Christchurch Park

Christchurch Park is Ipswich's first and most famous public park, covering 82 acres (33 hectares) close to the town centre. The land was once the site of a 12th-century Augustinian priory and became private property after the Dissolution of the Monasteries; Ipswich Borough Council purchased it in 1894 and opened it to the public on 11 April 1895. The park is free to enter and is run by the Borough Council. At its southern entrance stands Christchurch Mansion, a Tudor house built between 1548 and 1550 that now holds a public museum and art gallery with a tea room. Families come for the children's play area off Bolton Lane, alongside tennis courts, table tennis, bowling greens, croquet lawns and outdoor gym equipment. The park is well known for its formal gardens, including seasonal bedding, rose and shrub beds and a large rockery, and for two large ponds that support waterfowl and more than 100 bird species. It hosts major Ipswich events including fireworks, flower shows and music festivals, making it a dependable free day out all year round.
