About Cemetery Walk Play Area
Cemetery Walk play area sits in the Almondbury ward of Kirklees, on the eastern side of Huddersfield, and is a well-used community space combining a large open greenspace with a fenced children's play area and a multi-use games area. It is managed by Kirklees Council, which picked it as the first site in the ward to be reviewed under the Playable Spaces programme because its equipment was among the oldest in Almondbury. The refurbishment upgraded the play surfacing and repaired existing equipment while adding new features, so the play area now includes a large timber climbing unit, an inclusive basket swing, a metal roundabout, a green multiplay unit, a rocker and swings, with a five-a-side goal end and a MUGA for older children and ball games. Sculptural feature seating and native plantings were introduced to lift the look of the site and improve its biodiversity and sensory appeal, and extra play features were placed outside the fenced area to encourage use of the whole green space. The design set out to make the play provision more appealing and accessible to all users. It is a free, open-access neighbourhood play space.
