About Bowring Park

Bowring Park is a traditional district park in the heart of Wellington, bequeathed to the town in 1910 by Mrs J. Crump Bowring, widow of the Victorian entrepreneur John Crump Bowring. More than a century later it remains one of Wellington's best-used green spaces. Families come for the children's play area, which caters for ages 3 to 14, while older visitors enjoy a strong line-up of sports facilities: four floodlit all-weather tennis courts plus grass courts, two bowling greens with Crown Green bowls, a cricket pitch, two football pitches, an outdoor gym and table tennis tables. A large expanse of open green is popular for dog walking, football, kite flying and picnics, and a floral display adds colour in season. A cafe or kiosk serves refreshments and there is car parking on site, along with changing rooms for sports users. The park is free to visit and its mix of play, sport and open space makes it a reliable choice for a family afternoon or a longer stay in Wellington.
