About Roker Park
Roker Park is a historic seaside park in the Roker area of Sunderland, opened on 23 June 1880 on land donated by Sir Hedworth Williamson and the Church Commissioners. Managed by Sunderland City Council and one of the city's Green Flag parks, it is laid out in a roughly inverted L-shape bounded by Park Parade, Roker Park Terrace, Roker Park Road and Side Cliff Road. Families find two children's play areas near the Side Cliff Road entrance, one geared to younger children and one for older children, both reached through self-closing gates. Beyond the play areas there is a large freeform boating lake used for model boating, a Victorian cast-iron bandstand, a basketball court, tennis courts and a bowling green. A much-loved miniature narrow-gauge railway, built in the 1970s, carries passengers for a small donation. A wooden footbridge crosses a ravine and leads down toward Roker beach, so a park visit can easily be combined with time by the sea. Toilets are located near the play area and an ice cream van often visits in good weather. The park is wheelchair and buggy friendly and suitable for dog walking, with free on-street parking in the surrounding residential roads. As a public park it is free to enter and open year-round.
