About Mowbray Park

Mowbray Park is a seven-hectare Victorian park in the heart of Sunderland city centre, one of the city's Green Flag parks and listed on the English Heritage Register of Historic Parks and Gardens. Refurbished and reopened in 2000 with a Heritage Lottery grant, it has been returned to its Victorian character with a restored lake, a rebuilt bandstand, lakeside gardens and new artworks. The family-friendly children's play area is built to a Lewis Carroll 'Alice Through the Looking Glass' theme, complete with a distorted giant chequerboard and giant chess pieces that make it a distinctive spot for younger visitors. The park sits immediately alongside Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens, whose contemporary glass rotunda was completed in 2001, making it easy to combine a play visit with the museum. Set in a densely residential area close to the shops and transport of the city centre, the park offers pathways for walking and cycling plus areas for sitting and picnicking. As a council-managed public park it is free to enter and open to all, and its central location makes it one of the most accessible green spaces in Sunderland for families and visitors arriving by public transport.
