About Freemantle Common
Freemantle Common is an informal area of common land in Bitterne, Southampton, managed for wildlife by Southampton City Council. Surrounded by mixed woodland, it is a popular local open space where several less common birds such as treecreeper, nuthatch and coal tit can be seen. The common is also of historic interest: it sits on the line of the buried Roman road to Chichester, marked by a commemorative plaque at the junction of Peartree Avenue and Spring Road. For families there is a fenced children's play area, and the surrounding amenity grass provides space for informal play and ball games. Short walks lead through the common and into the adjoining woodland, offering an easy escape into nature close to home. Access is level from the surrounding pavements, although the unmade grass paths can become seasonally muddy after wet weather. There is currently no active friends group or formal management plan for the site. As a free, public common it is an everyday green space for families in Bitterne and the wider Peartree and Woolston area.
