About Trelai Park

Trelai Park is one of Cardiff's largest areas of playing fields, set in the Caerau area of Ely in the west of the city and managed by Cardiff Council. Opened in 1933 on land that had earlier been used as the Ely racecourse, the park now provides extensive sports pitches served by changing rooms, along with a large car park accessible from Vincent Road. Families come for the children's playground, which is suitable for children up to around the age of 14, and there is also a skatepark for older children and teenagers. One of the park's most distinctive features is the site of the Ely Roman villa in the middle of the open space, a first-century site first discovered in 1894 and now a scheduled ancient monument, still visible as an unmown area. The park is largely flat and open, making it good for informal games, walking and running, and footpaths link it towards Leckwith Woods. There are no public toilets or refreshment facilities on site, so families tend to bring their own. The park is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with no charge for admission.
