About City Stadium

City Stadium is an area of open parkland in Shieldfield, in the Ouseburn ward of Newcastle, managed by Newcastle City Council. The site was originally laid out in the 1950s and 1960s, once earmarked as part of plans to host the Empire Games, and the old cinder running track can still be seen. Today it is a free, open green space with a children's play area reached from the Newington Road entrance, roughly 120 metres from the gate. In partnership with Urban Green Newcastle and funded by Sport England, the park gained an interactive football wall made up of 16 impact-sensitive panels with lights, sounds and app-linked challenges, described as the first of its kind in a Newcastle park and free to use. Alongside the playground there is an artificial five-a-side pitch, a multi-use games area, basketball and outdoor fitness equipment. A network of footpaths and a cycle track link Heaton with the city centre and lead down into the Ouseburn Valley, where there is a wide range of places to eat and drink. There are no toilets within the park itself, and the nearest car park is on Newington Road. City Stadium is one of the council's enhanced, accessible play sites earmarked for investment.
