About Hodgkin Park
Hodgkin Park, also known as Benwell Dene, was donated to the people of Newcastle in 1899 by the banker Thomas Hodgkin. Owned by Newcastle City Council and managed by Urban Green Newcastle, it is a well-loved green space in the city's west end. The southern part of the park was refurbished in 2013 to provide a new children's play area, a multi-use games area and water features, and both the play area and water features are popular with families. Children can also play basketball, football and cricket here. The park is dotted with public art, including three sculptures - Paradise Gate, Metrolands Arbour and Nine Lives - and the community organisation Room In The Park runs regular family activities and events throughout the year. The terrain is quite steep, and the most accessible part of the park is at the entrance off South Benwell Road, where the nearest car park is also located. There are no toilets within the park, so it is worth planning ahead for longer visits. Entry is free, making it a valuable play resource for families in Benwell.
