About Leazes Park

Leazes Park is Newcastle's oldest park, opened in 1873 close to St James' Park football stadium on the edge of the city centre. Owned by Newcastle City Council and managed by Urban Green Newcastle, it is a Victorian park built around an ornamental lake. Families will find a large play area in the woodland to the north of the park, thoughtfully separated into two areas so children of all ages can enjoy playing. There is plenty more to do: six tennis courts and two basketball courts open for play at all times, table tennis, and a lake stocked for fishing and home to wildfowl, ducks and swans. Picnic and BBQ areas make it a good spot for a family afternoon. The Tower Cafe serves refreshments and holds the key to the disabled-access toilet with baby change. Pathways run throughout the park and are suitable for prams or wheelchairs. There is a small car park, but as it sits opposite a hospital it gets busy, so public transport into the city centre is often easier. The park is free to enter.
