About Northcliffe Park

Northcliffe Park is an 86-acre green space in Shipley made up of parkland, meadows, Northcliffe Woods and the Norman Rae Playing Fields on a hillside overlooking Bradford. In 1911 mill owner Sir Norman Rae bought the land from the Rosse family and donated it to Shipley Town Council; the park opened in 1920 and was developed with recreational facilities through that decade. It has two play areas with a variety of equipment including climbing frames, swings, slides and tunnels. Other attractions include eight turn-up-and-play tennis courts, crown green bowling, a miniature railway operated by the Bradford Model Engineering Society in the woodland, outdoor fitness equipment, a full-size football pitch and picnic areas. The woods are rich in wildlife, with more than 100 recorded flowering plant species, bluebells, jackdaws, tawny owls and recently ring-necked parakeets, plus a wildflower area supporting butterflies and pollinators. The Friends of Northcliffe run seasonal activities throughout the year, from Easter hunts and nature walks to the Rae Gala, Big Lunch and kite festivals. The park is open 24 hours a day, all year round, and is free to use. It is managed by the City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council.
