About Crookes Valley Park
Crookes Valley Park is a compact area of public parkland in the Crookesmoor district, just under two kilometres west of Sheffield city centre and close to the university. It covers roughly 4.8 hectares and is centred on a deep lake that began life as the Old Great Dam, an 18th-century reservoir that once supplied water to the growing town; the 1780s Dam House still stands beside the water. The park is managed by Sheffield City Council, is open 24 hours and is free to visit. For families there is a children's play area, and around it the lake, bowling greens and footpaths make for an easy stroll in a surprisingly green setting so close to the centre. The park adjoins Ponderosa and sits near Weston Park, so it can be combined with a longer walk through the chain of green spaces on the west side of the city. There is no dedicated car park, so most visitors arrive on foot or park on nearby streets. With its historic lake, open grass and play area, Crookes Valley Park is a handy free green space for families living near the city centre and the universities.
