About Mina Road Park
Mina Road Park is a traditional Victorian park in the St Werburghs district of Bristol, operated by Bristol City Council. It opened on 30 June 1886 after a philanthropic donation by William Hunt to Bristol Corporation, and was laid out by Borough Engineer Frederick Ashmead in the typical late-19th-century style, with shrubberies, flower beds and a central grassed area; it was formerly known as Hunt's Pleasure Ground. The children's play area sits in the northern corner, on the site of a former ornamental lake, and underwent a comprehensive renovation completed in December 2023 that replaced ageing equipment with custom installations, including a bespoke aeroplane climbing frame and a painted road circuit, with play provision aimed at children aged 0 to 12. Alongside it is a multi-use games area with basketball hoops and football goals. The wider park retains plenty of Victorian character, including mature tree-lined avenues, timber footbridges spanning Horfield Brook and a curious Grade II listed cast-iron urinal in the south-east corner. The park hosts the annual Picnic in the Park community festival. It is open at all times with no admission charge.
